Menopause

Dr. Diego is happy to provide ongoing support and treatment for menopause.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that every woman undergoes after a certain age. Typically, this process starts when women near their 50s and is accompanied by a variety of different symptoms. Physical symptoms such as hot flashes brought on by hormonal changes are quite common and can cause a lot of disruption to sleep. Additionally, women undergoing menopause often report experiencing lower energy or mood swings. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, gynecologist Loraine Diego, MD may be able to help. Though we can’t reverse the aging process, our Los Angeles center does offer menopause management solutions to help you feel more like yourself again.

What Causes Menopause?

Menopause typically appears around age 45-55. However, some women may experience menopause earlier or later. In some cases, symptoms may not appear until a woman is well within her 50s. The most obvious sign of undergoing menopause is going 12 months without a menstrual period. During that span, you may also notice chills, night sweats, mood swings, thinning hair, and vaginal dryness. Typically, skipping periods every other month is common during perimenopause. Sometimes, you may even skip your period for several months at a time. Despite this irregularity, pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause and this should be taken into account. Dr. Diego is happy to provide ongoing support and treatment for menopause. Additionally, she can provide patients with contraceptives, STD testing, and Well Woman Exams to ensure their optimal health.

What Are Some Common Symptoms?

While the cessation of periods can be a welcome symptom for many women, other symptoms that come with perimenopause and menopause can be less desirable. They include:

  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Hot Flashes
  • Night Sweats
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Decreased Sex Drive
  • Emotional Changes
  • Weight Gain
  • Thinning Hair
  • Dry Skin

Not everyone experiences all of these symptoms, but for many women, perimenopause and menopause can be quite uncomfortable. What’s more, these symptoms can continue for years after your last period, and well into postmenopause.

How Can I Treat Menopause?

Though menopause can’t be reversed, there are some treatments available to help manage this condition. Loraine Diego, MD prefers taking a holistic approach to treating people when possible. That is why our center happily provides supplement treatments and Bioidentical Hormones to address your concerns. Through these treatment options, we can add estrogen, progesterone, or both to your body. This can make up for the lowered production of these hormones, improving your comfort levels and the control you have over your body.

These treatments are both naturally-derived and organic. The hormones offered at our center have a molecular structure identical to the structure of the hormones your body makes. Your body can’t tell the difference between these bioidentical hormones and the ones it makes on its own, so they’re a highly effective way to balance your hormone levels.
